Meet THOO SEIK YEE
Advo Operations

Name: Thoo Seik Yee
Nickname: Ah Seik
Date of Joining: June 2009

1) Why did you join AdvoEdu?

To be honest, I was just looking for a job after I graduated.

*3b) Share with us one dream that you would like to achieve in 2012.

Buy my dream car- Mini Cooper, and drive my father around to eat good food.

*4) Share with us one dream that you have achieved with AdvoEdu.

In my first dreamboard, I wrote that I wanted to start my own business. Although I haven’t made it big, I have already started my first shop in Advocators in Jan 2010. I have definitely learnt a lot through the whole process, and I definitely want to make it successful!

5) Sum up your everyday life in AdvoEdu with three words.

Insanely crazy life

6) What would you say to someone who is thinking of joining us?

You have made the right choice. My transformation is the best testimonial. I used to be someone who would just carry on with my life without any goals, yet now I am driven to move faster to achieve my dreams.

7) What is one thing that you never imagined doing, but did with AdvoEdu?

This happened quite recently. We were going around giving people hi-5s. If you were to ask me if I would do this alone, I guess not. But with Advo people, we make it happen and we bring the smiles back into the lives of others.

8 ) What is the toughest part of your job (and how do you overcome it?)

To be frank, a call-handling job was blacklisted by me in the past, and talking to people was like killing me. But guess what? Now I am doing it and I can say that I am 100% confident of talking to anyone. At the beginning, I got scolded and rejected by many parents, yet I think all these experiences and practice have made me who I am today.

*9) If you were an animal, what would you be and why?

I would be a dragon. Do I need to say more? My zodiac is dragon. My impression of a dragon has always been one of a brave creature, and I want to be brave and go vigorously in my dream pursuit.

*10a ) If you were stranded in your office for two weeks with your teammates, what would you be doing?

First, we would work together to think of a way to get out of the office. If we couldn’t get out of office, we would definitely enjoy 2 weeks over there. We are all crazy people. I would definitely make the office our playground and play to the max.

Meet FENG YI
Head of English Dept, Language Alive

Name: Feng-Yi
Nickname: The Smile
Date of Joining: February 2011

1) Why did you join AdvoEdu?

I have always enjoyed coaching English, but did not want to do it in government schools. Hence, AdvoEdu was a very natural option.

*3a) Share with us one biggest dream that you would like to achieve in life.

I would like to be a top global educator. I dream of creating a system that not only helps students excel in their studies, but also learn more about the world and the people around them. Singaporeans are known to be pretty parochial, and I would like to change this. I would love to create more social awareness and erase myths about cultures, races, and religions. I am at AdvoEdu because I believe that education is the best platform to do this.

*4) Share with us one dream that you have achieved with AdvoEdu

Create a most original workshop that integrated Social Studies with English. I believe this hybrid workshop is the first of its kind. It was birthed on the very strong belief that subjects are merely formal categories that should never limit our desire to learn.

5) Sum up your everyday life in AdvoEdu with three words.

Ever-changing, enriching, gratifying

6) What would you say to someone who is thinking of joining us?

Be glad for the job vacancy. Companies like AdvoEdu are rare.

7) What is one thing that you never imagined doing, but did with AdvoEdu?

Being a speaker at an education-related event.

*9) If you were an animal, what would you be and why?

I would be a human. Human are smart animals capable of good moral judgment and inventiveness. Humans are not infallible but their contributions and goodwill matter.

*10a ) If you were stranded in your office for two weeks with your teammates, what would you be doing?

It really depends on what time of the year it is. There are some who may gasp when they hear this, but sometimes we voluntarily make ourselves stranded (in other words, camp at our second home) because we really see the purpose of getting things done. During non-peak periods like December, well, we would most probably be stranded on another peninsula. In my head, I see ourselves touring the world and visiting other crazy companies. We would do bungee jumps (or watch a colleague bungee jump), bring our families to restaurants that they have never heard of, and so on.

Meet ADELINE YEO
Top PSLE English Trainer

Name: Adeline Yeo
Nickname: p0kky (p0kks)
Date of Joining: 16th November 2010

1) Why did you join AdvoEdu?

I was looking for a company that pays me for my creativity, individuality and allows me to exercise liberty in the way I execute my ideas.

*3a) Share with us one biggest dream that you would like to achieve in life.

I will own my chain of F&B/lifestyle outlets that advocate appreciation of the Arts and gastronomy. While doing so, I enjoy flexibility in work commitment so that I can devote myself to my family, who means everything to me.

*4) Share with us one dream that you have achieved with AdvoEdu

I’ve always wanted to be an author since I was 5 or 7-years-old. Together with AdvoEdu, I have written 2 top-selling PSLE English academic books and am in the process of creating a top-secret book which… I shall stop here. =)

5) Sum up your everyday life in AdvoEdu with three words.

Rollercoaster. Voracious. Ineffable.

6) What would you say to someone who is thinking of joining us?

Be prepared to live the lives of many in a lifetime.

*9) If you were an animal, what would you be and why?

I would be, and am a Dragon. True to my zodiac, I am self-determined and devoted to what I do. In addition, I love being a leader and get things moving! It is fulfilling and exciting to push my teammates along so that we can live our dreams together.

b) Amid the fast-paced work culture that we have, have you ever misplaced any of your personal belongings? (Describe and elaborate on the entire process)

I have mysteriously lost a Nikon camera charger and I believe it has not seen the light of day ever since. The most frequent misplacement would be my Apple VGA Converter. From time to time, it moves from my desk to Wai Sun’s (the Founder of ISUN). Sometimes, it even appears in a miscellaneous paper bag he has, near his desk.

11) What was the best mistake you made on the job. Why was it the best?

I told a parent off because she kept insisting that we only wanted to make the sales by bringing in more students. I made it clear to her what AdvoEdu coaches do and what we stand strongly for- the best interest of the student. She thanked me for being so straightforward and built a better relationship with her son from that incident.

1) Why did you join AdvoEdu?

My interest was kindled after 2 rounds of interview, when I found out that there was a place in this world that still cared about, and lived with dreams. While working in Advo Edu, I found the hope and belief in Advo’s growth and also my own personal growth.

2) Share with us an interesting experience in your first week with AdvoEdu.

Surprised. Excited. Comfortable. I almost forgot that I was a newcomer haha. Newcomers are usually nervous, but I believe Advo took that feeling away from me. My first day in Advo was a day of party. I couldn’t tell who was a boss or who was an employee. Everything simply created the feeling of a family, and I loved it. And in the first week, I received great guidance and help in my work which was something different from what I had imagined before joining Advo. I felt more excited to work in such an environment.

3) Share with us one biggest dream that you would like to achieve in life.

To be the TOP finance manager to contribute to Advo’s growth and to build up the strongest and happiest team in the world!

4) Share with us one dream that you have achieved with AdvoEdu.

With Advo’s help, my dream to have a family trip came true. That’s awesome!

5) Sum up your everyday life in AdvoEdu with three words.

Learning. Growth. Happiness

6) What would you say to someone who is thinking of joining us?

“Who are you? What are your dreams? Do you want to work together with us to change the world?” If you are crazy enough and want to find out the answers to these questions, Advo is the place for you to do it! It sounds crazy but it’s true!

7) What is one thing that you never imagined doing, but did with AdvoEdu?

I realized my dreams and those of others. More importantly, we CARE for and HELP one another pursue them.

8) What is the toughest part of your job (and how do you overcome it?)

The toughest part of my job is when I dabble in many things that are considered new. When no one has experienced these things before, they cannot fully understand what I face each day. However, to be honest, I have a great manager who gives me very useful guidance and great encouragement that has helped me overcome these challenges.  And people around me usually show me care and love even though they do not really know what I do every day. It’s really great, isn’t it?

9) If you were an animal, what would you be and why?

Bear! Bears are cute. Everyone loves bears, teddy bears! Haha. Bears are strong and big enough to protect themselves and their loved ones, and soft-hearted enough to show care and love (that’s what I feel when I look at big bears!)

10a ) If you were stranded in your office for two weeks with your teammates, what would you be doing?

If I were stranded in my office for two weeks, i would be …working and playing with my teammates haha. I would enjoy time with them. With my teammates, I believe two weeks would not be very long haha.  We have a lot of things to do and we also know how to enjoy ourselves during busy periods. I think I will not feel lonely and bored if they are around haha. We might spend time doing something together or share and understand each other more.

11) What was the best mistake you made on the job. Why was it the best?

The best mistake I made in 2011 might be when I failed to prepare well for the presentation titled “What I Want to Be in Advo 2012″. Because of that mistake, I realized my biggest weakness which I had ignored for the entire year. Because of that mistake, I also realized that I have a strong and great team who is always beside me, and more importantly, I realized how much we love and care for each other. Because of that mistake, I realized that Advo always gives a second chance to people  who are willing to learn and grow from their mistakes.

Meet XIN YI
Deputy CEO of iSun

Name: Xin Yi
Nickname: Meowster
Date of Joining: May 2008

2) Share with us an interesting experience in your first week with AdvoEdu.

its not really an experience per se but it was an interesting discovery. in 2008 when i joined Advo, there were only 5 people in the company including myself. a few days into my job, i discovered that out of the 4 others, there was actually one other strict vegetarian! it was an amazing moment of realization, because vegetarians are still quite rare, and to have 2 vegetarians in a small start-up company is like heaven. at that moment, i knew that Advo was meant for me, in every sense of the world.

*3a) Share with us one biggest dream that you would like to achieve in life.

to live the life of a young multi-millionaire, owning a few inter-connected businesses related to spreading happiness, positivity and the joys of life, at the same time leading a team of young people to be advocates of animal welfare and vegetarianism.

*4) Share with us one dream that you have achieved with AdvoEdu.

Well, I achieved more than one dream with Advo. I went to Korea with some peeps from Advo & experienced snow for the first time. I am also in the midst of authoring a book.

Lastly, through bringing my sis into AdvoEdu, I fulfilled her dream of helping kids to have passion and curiosity for English, learning lessons that they can use for the rest of their lives.

5) Sum up your everyday life in AdvoEdu with three words.

crazy, busy, entertaining

6) What would you say to someone who is thinking of joining us?

as long as you believe there is something EXTRAORDINARY about you and you want only the BEST in life, JOIN US!

8 ) What is the toughest part of your job (and how do you overcome it?)

handling multiple tasks/projects at one time and having many deadlines to meet. I believe a sharper focus will work for me, as well as learning to trust and delegate my tasks or leverage on team mates. (well, I am still learning the art of delegation!)

*9) If you were an animal, what would you be and why?

i would be a cat, of course. because cats are lovely felines. they are classy, elegant, grand, and have great attitude. they know they are at the top of the world, and at most time they do not do things just to please others. they only do things because they WANT to.

*10a ) If you were stranded in your office for two weeks with your teammates, what would you be doing?

well, besides doing work and enjoying each other’s company, we will be doing crazy things like popping our heads out of the windows waving to random passers-by every morning and seeing how many people will wave back.
